“Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them." Luke 7:36-38

We know little about her, nor why she was crying so hard. We just know that Jesus has yet again drawn a weary sinner to his feet. Upon entering the Pharisee’s home nobody had given Jesus anything to clean his dusty feet, which was customary. This woman was so tearful that her tears ended up washing His feet instead. The Pharisee, with his religious heart, questioned her actions… but not Jesus. In his compassion he forgave what was on her repentant heart. When I think about it, if I am truly repentant, shouldn’t I react in a similar way? True repentance isn’t just a brief acknowledgment of our actions. It is heartfelt, with a deep understanding that causes us to be sorrowful. Then is when our heart is workable clay in our Father’s hands. Then is when true change can emerge.

Later on, the morning of Jesus’ resurrection Jesus asked Mary Magdalene a question that also fits what Jesus might have asked the weeping woman in the Pharisee’s home: “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Can’t you just imagine this weeping woman replying, “YOU Lord… my Savior and Redeemer!”
