We all fight this battle on a daily basis. Many sense the attacks but are not aware of the source. The Bible talks about the serpent, the spirit of the air, the spiritual enemy Satan, whom we on earth cannot see but attacks with varying degrees of intensity. But many no longer acknowledge Satan as the source because they no longer want to believe he exists. Not understanding leaves us more vulnerable. We were never meant to fight this enemy alone.
A child is in the scene rather than an adult to draw attention to how vulnerable we are to Satan on our own. We are no threat by ourselves. But with Christ… the power shifts!! We just need to believe it. Jesus, who is far greater and lives in every believer has already won the final battle on the cross. He also provides angels to watch over us and protect us. “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” (Psalms 91:11) Can you imagine how much less volunerable we'd all feel if we could see these mighty warriors protecting and fighting for us? I don't believe at all that they look anything like the cute chubby babies with wings or the feminine harp players typically depicted. These guardians are great warriors, powerful agents and messengers of God, likely even as big as 18 feet tall! How much more, if we really understood God's power and the help He provides us through His army of angels, would we approach the enemy more boldy and simply tell him (with the authority of Jesus who lives in us) to "Back off Satan!!" If we really understood the power of Jesus who lives within us, it would be proclaimed much more often.
In addition to having confidence in the army around us... there are choices we make that also help us in this spiritual battle. Whether we are victims or victors is determined by how we live in Christ Jesus; how we handle the circumstances in His strength and His wisdom; not our own. If we are to "live in the world but not of the world" there are going to be conflicts. Even struggles with other people can be spiritually manipulated. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Ephesians 6:12) Therefore, peace will not come out of circumstances but out of a relationship with Christ. The Bible talks about that relationship as a soldier's armor that protects us. When we live clothed with the armor of God by walking in obedient faith to his Word and promises (Ephesians 6:10-18), Satan will be defeated. This armor will tear down strongholds and guard us against Satan's schemes of deception and temptation. Satan is called the spirit of the air because he is the great deceiver who loves to whisper into our thoughts. We must be consistantly replacing our thoughts with the Truth in Scripture. Our focus needs to be on Jesus's forgiveness and salvation so we don't focus on the past and Satan's accusations that condemn our past failures. Strong faith requires remembering God's past goodness throughout our lives to give us confidence to face the enemy in the future. We need to pray up, fast up and suit up daily. Use God's Word and Truth against the enemy's deception; draw near to God to resist temptation. We need to cover ourselves daily in His Word, His righteouness, peace, faith, and salvation. Confidently put on Christ's armor, remember the army fighting for you and the One who lives in you and put Satan back in His place. Remind him of his position at your feet and proclaim, "Back off Satan!"
